The Japanese haiku master Basho (1644-1694) wrote in
Kawazu Awase (1686):
"Go to the pine or bamboo if you want to learn about the pine or bamboo. Leave your
ego behind, otherwise you impose yourself on the object and do not learn. Your poetry
comes naturally when you have become one with the object. When you plunge deep into
the object, you'll see a hidden glimmering there. If your feeling is not natural,
if you and the object are separate— then even your well phrased poetry is not
true poetry but merely your subjective counterfeit."
